Newburgh Trunk or Treat draws thousands to Broadway

Broadway became a Halloween celebration Oct. 28 as the City of Newburgh and Newburgh Enlarged City School District teamed up for their annual Trunk or Treat event.

Broadway was closed between Liberty Street and Lander Street for two hours, from 6 to 8 p.m., as residents, businesses and community organizations decorated more than 50 vehicles and handed out candy, treats and community resources to children and families.

Organizers estimated that about 5,000 people attended the event.

The evening featured music and a laser show by DJ Erick Santana, along with a fire cauldron where attendees could make s’mores. A photo booth also was available, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Students from Newburgh Free Academy performed selections from the upcoming NFA production of The Wiz, which is scheduled for Nov. 13 and 14.

The event provided an opportunity for families to enjoy Halloween in a safe, community-oriented setting while bringing together city and school district resources.

“I never dreamed this event could grow to be so large,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jackielyn Manning Campbell said. “This is a prime example of what can happen when our organizations work together. Our resources are united for a wonderful and safe event for our children and families to enjoy.”

Manning Campbell also credited the City of Newburgh and the district’s Family and Community Engagement team for their work in organizing and expanding the event.

The annual Trunk or Treat has become a major community Halloween gathering, bringing families, students, residents and local organizations together on Broadway for an evening of treats, entertainment and community spirit.
