On Thursday, Oct. 1, at approximately 9 p.m., Town of Cornwall Police officers responded to the area of Main St. and Willow Ave. in response to a complaint. There, officers encountered a subject who became confrontational and made threats towards officers, including threats to shoot officers at the scene. Due to the escalating situation, additional police units were requested to respond. Among them, officers from the Woodbury, Cornwall-on-Hudson, Montgomery, Blooming Grove and Highlands Police Departments; New York State Police, New York State Park Police and Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
At the scene, the subject retreated into a residence and fled the residence on foot through the rear of the property. Officers canvassed the surrounding area and, shortly thereafter, located the subject attempting to re-enter the residence. Officers again confronted the subject, at which time he physically resisted arrest and assaulted officers. Officers were ultimately able to take the subject into custody.
Joseph Keegan, 35, of Cornwall, was arrested and charged with two counts of assault in the second degree, disorderly conduct, harassment in the second degree, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree and resisting arrest. Keegan was arraigned in City of Newburgh Court and remanded to the Orange County Jail.
Two CPD officers sustained injuries during the incident, the department’s press release on the incident said. Both officers were transported for medical evaluation, treated, and subsequently released.
