The freshman led the way as the Cornwall Dragons poked their heads over .500 in the division.

Kathryn Breheny scored both goals as the Dragons defeated the Valley Central Vikings 2-0 on Oct. 13 in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division II girls’ soccer game at Valley Central High School in Montgomery.

The win completed the Dragons’ season sweep over the Vikings. They had previously beaten the Vikings, 3-2, on Sept. 16 at Cornwall High School.

This time the Dragons’ defense was strong and Breheny gave them just enough offense to get the job done, despite an early miss. She had a shot go wide to the left in the 20th minute before she found the back of the net three minutes later.

She took the ball down the field and shot the ball past the Valley Central goalkeeper to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings, meanwhile, had an early opportunity to score, but the shot was turned back by the defense. Then with about 10 seconds left in the first half, Valley Central’s Hayela Shekeenah Gourdet sends the ball toward the goal, but the Dragons’ keeper knocked the ball away to preserve the 1-0 lead.

The Dragons extended their lead late in the game when Breheny scored her second goal of the day in the 65th minute to double the Dragons’ lead to 2-0 in an otherwise uneventful second half.

The Dragons had a tough draw at the end of the week when they closed it out with the with a road game against the Warwick Wildcats on Thursday at Sanfordville High School. The Dragons lost the game, 3-1, despite taking the lead at halftime. However, the Wildcats scored three second-half goals to pull out the victory.

After the loss to Warwick, the Dragons would have to split this week’s games against the Washingtonville Wizards and the Minisink Valley Warriors to guarantee a berth in the Section 9 Class AA tournament, which will be seeded on Thursday.
