Cale Hellums’ record-tying performance Saturday earned the Army West Point quarterback another weekly honor.
Hellums was named the American Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after rushing for 195 yards and five touchdowns in Army’s 56-24 victory over Florida Atlantic at Michie Stadium.
The sophomore quarterback scored on runs of 58, 4, 2, 3 and 1 yards, tying the Army program record for rushing touchdowns in a game. He matched a mark previously set by Bryson Daily in 2024, Kelvin Hopkins Jr. in 2018 and Carlton Jones in 2004.
Hellums’ performance helped Army improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the American Conference. The Black Knights scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions and finished with 479 rushing yards, averaging 8 yards per carry.
Army attempted only two passes in the game, completing one for 2 yards.
The Tomball, Texas, native has rushed for 719 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, with both totals ranking second among FBS quarterbacks.
Saturday’s performance also marked the 10th time in Hellums’ career that he has rushed for at least two touchdowns in a game. He is three such games away from tying Daily’s Army record of 13.
Hellums was also named Monday to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 for Week 7 and the Davey O’Brien Award Midseason Watch List.
He is the second Army player in as many weeks to receive an American Conference weekly award. Dawson Jones was named Special Teams Player of the Week following his game-winning field goal against Tulane in Week 6.
The Black Knights will visit Tulsa (4-3) on Friday, looking to avenge last year’s loss. The game will be televised on ESPN2, beginning at 8:30 p.m.
They return home on November 7 for a nationally-televised prime time game against Air Force.
