The Wallkill Panthers have won eight straight games to start the season, but the gauntlet is coming.

They weren’t quiet wins either.

Apart from a two-goal win over the Saugerties Sawyers in their first game of the season, the Panthers have won every other game by at least four goals, finishing the stretch with 10-1 win over the Poughkeepsie Pioneers in a Mid Hudson Athletic League girls’ soccer game on Thursday at Robinson Field in Wallkill.

“I feel like we’ve been playing well as a team,” Wallkill goalkeeper and captain Aoife Brady said. “We’ve been scoring a lot, which is good, but I feel like our team chemistry has been what’s put us through these past couple of games.”

Brady’s co-captain Paige Pomeroy scored two goals and Kendall Moscatello, who celebrated her birthday on Thursday, added two as well.

“We’ve just been working the ball up, passing it around, keeping it close, not just kicking and working the ball through,” Pomeroy said.

The goals came early and often with Pomeroy opening the scoring four minutes in off an assist from Haylee Presto. About a minute later,

Moscatello’s first goal made it 2-0.

Additional goals from Emma Randolph, Taigan Lahar and Gabriella Gualtiere gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead. In the 16th minute.

“I feel like we’ve been working up the wings recently, which we’ve been practicing and just putting the ball in the back of the net,” Brady said. “We’ve done a good job doing that so far, and just hopefully keep it up.”

The Panthers only had one hiccup in the game when Poughkeepsie’s Daevanna Douglas snuck a ball into the goal with three minutes to go in the first half. Wallkill added five more goals in the second half to put the game even further out of reach.

The high offensive output has given the Panthers an opportunity to get everyone into every game.

“A certain percentage of the bench will improve just by having some extra game minutes, as well as working hard in practice,” Wallkill coach Kelly Wood said.

The Panthers opened the week on Sept. 29 with a 9-0 win over the Dukes.

Thursday’s game was their second over the Pioneers this season. Wallkill won the first game, 8-0, in Poughkeepsie.

“We’re in the softer part of our schedule,” Wood said.

But what he calls the gauntlet is coming, including two games against the division rival Our Land of Lourdes Warriors, also undefeated, despite battling Section 4 Horseheads to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 6.

Unbeaten Mount Academy also awaits.

“We have to use what we’ve been doing the past couple weeks and just focus on winning the bigger games,” Brady said.

“They’re going to be much harder games, so we’ve just got to focus in and mentally get ready.”
