A new book by local historian A.J. Schenkman explores the history of the Hudson Valley, from Native American settlements and Dutch colonial roots to the American Revolution, Gilded Age estates and the region’s artistic heritage.
“A History Lover’s Guide to the Hudson Valley,” published by Arcadia Publishing’s History Press imprint, takes readers beyond traditional guidebooks to explore historic communities and lesser-known stories throughout the region.
The book includes a look at Newburgh, where Gen. George Washington maintained his longest headquarters during the Revolutionary War; Kingston, the state’s first capital; the Battle of Saratoga; Frederic Church’s Olana; Gilded Age estates; and the nation’s first presidential library in Hyde Park.
Schenkman, a historian, educator and author, specializes in uncovering lesser-known human stories of American history. His previous books include “Wicked Ulster County,” “Murder and Mayhem in Ulster County,” “Patriots and Spies in Revolutionary New York” and “Hispanic Americans in the Civil War.”
He also is the author of the children’s book “Franklin’s Trees,” about Franklin D. Roosevelt’s interest in conservation.
“A History Lover’s Guide to the Hudson Valley” is scheduled for publication soon.
