Montgomery residents turn out for fall festival

The Village of Montgomery held its annual fall festival Saturday and a trunk-or-treat Sunday, with food, games, music, vendors and more. This year’s festival also included a scaled-back Clinton Street Car Show and the Valley Central Scholarship Council’s annual duck derby.

About 2,000 people attended the festival at Veterans Memorial Park, which ran from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees browsed local business and craft vendors, bought seasonal treats from food trucks, entered raffles and tricky tray drawings, and listened to DJ Grand Finale. Children’s activities included bounce houses, pony rides, Power Wheels races and helicopter rides.

From the athletic fields, attendees could walk to Bachelor Street to see a small car and bike show and several touch-a-truck displays. Visitors climbed into ambulances and fire trucks, honked the horns of construction vehicles and looked at vintage cars. Village event coordinator Tracey Kazie said the car and bike show was supposed to be much larger. She said the Clinton Street Car Show will return next September.

At 2 p.m., the Valley Central Scholarship Council and the Montgomery Fire Department turned part of Bachelor Street into a slip-and-slide-style chute for the duck derby. The council held one race for the public with 960 rubber ducks and another for businesses and community agencies with 32 giant rubber ducks. Spectators lined the chute to watch the ducks float down the street.

Lisa Joyce won first place and $500. Amy Morganbesser won second place and $250, and Alfonsina Jimenez won third place and $100. The council also gave a $50 gift card to Valley Central senior Sarah Messing, a $25 gift card to Kris Waite in a random drawing, and a “quack pack” to Rhonda Paul for finishing last. The derby raised about $10,000 for scholarships for high school seniors.

On Sunday, about 700 children and family members attended the village’s trunk-or-treat at the Montgomery Senior Center from 3 to 6 p.m. The event featured 14 decorated trunks, a crafts table, food and drinks, music, pony rides and candy.

Kazie called both events a success. She said she enjoyed working with many people and setting up activities for children, and hopes to keep expanding the fall festival with more attractions.

“The weekend was amazing! It was great incorporating the duck derby into the fall fest and seeing everyone collaborating for these events,” Kazie said Monday. “My favorite part is the kids section; I like including activities that involve kids, not just adults.”
