A 62-year-old Town of Newburgh man was charged with burglary and other offenses following an overnight break-in at South Plank Plaza, police said.

Town of Newburgh police responded to the plaza at 181 South Plank Road at about 8:30 a.m. Oct. 7 after receiving a report of a burglary. Officers found the front glass doors of two businesses had been shattered and determined one of the businesses had been burglarized.

Detectives processed the businesses and collected evidence. An investigation by patrol officers and detectives led to the identification of Duane H. Williams as a suspect.

On Thursday, police executed a court-authorized search warrant at Williams’ residence, where evidence was recovered. Williams was taken into custody.
Williams was charged with third-degree burglary, attempted third-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief and petit larceny.

Williams was arraigned Friday before Judge Trachte in Newburgh City Court and remanded to the custody of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office pending further court proceedings.

The investigation was assisted by the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center, Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Orange County Probation Department and Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation and is not evidence of guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
