Maybrook sets Halloween curfew discusses Main Street property

The Maybrook Village Board discussed the completion of the village’s annual paving project, the status of a property at 114 Main St. and questions surrounding the release of a man arrested in a domestic violence case during its Oct. 19 meeting.

Mayor Dennis Leahy reported that the village’s 2026 street paving project has been completed.

The project included Spring Street, Jewel Street, William Street, Charles Street, Maiden Lane and the Abbey Avenue cul-de-sac.

Leahy thanked Department of Public Works Superintendent Matt Thorp and the DPW crew for coordinating the work and completing it with minimal disruption to residents. He also thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during the construction.

Village Attorney Elizabeth Cassidy updated the board on the ongoing matter involving the property at 114 Main St.

The building inspector had asked Cassidy to investigate pursuing an unsafe-building proceeding involving the property. The property owner’s attorney has since contacted the village.

Cassidy said she sent the owner’s attorney a detailed list of violations and work that needs to be completed at the property. She planned to speak with the attorney later in the week to determine the owner’s plans.

Cassidy said the matter remains active, but the village was not taking immediate action to pursue an unsafe-building proceeding.

Chief explains release of domestic violence suspect
The most extensive discussion of the meeting involved questions raised by residents on social media about the release of a man arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident.

Police Chief Dennis Barnett emphasized that the Maybrook Police Department did not release the suspect.

According to the department’s original report, officers responded Oct. 4 to 819 Tower Ave. for a report of a domestic disturbance involving a woman who had reportedly been struck with an unknown object. Police said the investigation determined that the suspect, identified as Frederick Douglas Parks, struck the woman in the head with a dumbbell, causing an injury, and also choked and struck her multiple times.

Parks was arrested on charges of second-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree harassment. He was arraigned by CAP arraignment Judge Hosking and released on his own recognizance with an order of protection, according to the police department.

Barnett told the board that the department brought the defendant before a judge after completing its investigation, and that the judge made the decision to release him.

“The district attorney did ask for bail in the case,” Barnett said, adding later that the requested amount was $35,000.

Halloween curfew set
The village’s Halloween curfew will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Oct. 30 and continuing through Nov. 1.

Trick-or-treating in the village is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

Residents who plan to distribute candy were asked to leave their porch lights on.
