Marlboro Student Attends National Youth and Government Conference

Marlboro High School Grade 12 student Pietro LoPresti attended the Conference on National Affairs (CONA) during the first week of July at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC.

Each summer, Youth and Government programs from across the country come together for the weeklong conference. Selected delegates prepare proposals on issues of national importance to present and debate during the conference.

Pietro represented both Marlboro and New York state at this year’s conference. He is the second Marlboro student to attend CONA and was selected by his peers at the New York State Youth and Government Convention in March.

Congratulations, Pietro, on this incredible accomplishment!

Weekly Recipe
Spiced Pumpkin Bundt Cake
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup brown sugar, packed
½ cup vegetable oil
1 cup canned pumpkin puree.
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Powdered sugar for dusting
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a Bundt pan thoroughly with cooking spray or butter. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vegetable oil. Mix until well combined. Add the pumpkin puree, eggs, and vanilla extract to the sugar mixture. Beat until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined. If using, gently fold in the chopped walnuts or pecans.
Pour the batter into the prepared Bundt pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully invert it onto a wire rack and allow it to cool completely.
Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar if desired. Slice and serve.
