A 57-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday morning following a dispute between neighbors, and a suspect was arrested at the scene, police said.

Town of New Windsor police responded to Hawthorn Way at about 8:59 a.m. April 8 for a report of shots fired. Officers found a man, identified as Larome A. Johnson of New Windsor, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police and emergency medical personnel initiated life-saving measures before Johnson was transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police arrested Thomas J. Crews, 47, at the scene. He was charged with second-degree murder, a Class A felony. Crews was arraigned before Judge Maureen Calderin and remanded.

A preliminary investigation indicates the shooting stemmed from a long-standing dispute between neighbors. Authorities said the incident appears to be isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains ongoing. Town police were assisted by the New York State Police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Town of New Windsor Police Department Detective Bureau at 845-565-7000.

Town Supervisor Stephen Bedetti called the incident a “heartbreaking tragedy” and expressed condolences to the victim’s family, while thanking responding agencies for their work.
