Maher applauds decision not to televise execution

Assemblyman Brian Maher, R-C-Walden, is applauding the Trump administration’s decision not to publicly livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting.

Maher said he contacted members of the Trump administration to voice concerns about broadcasting the execution, arguing that doing so would turn a solemn act of justice into a public spectacle.

Maher, who cited his Catholic faith and recent military deployment to the Middle East and East Africa, said the United States should uphold its principles even when carrying out the most serious punishments.

“Justice does not require a camera crew, a live feed or a public spectacle,” Maher said.
