As Orange County prepares for the general election in November, Democratic, Republican and Conservative primaries were held Tuesday, June 24, with several key races taking place in the Newburgh area.

Voters turned out across the city and surrounding areas to cast their ballots in races for Orange County Legislature and Newburgh City Council. Unofficial results were posted Tuesday night and later updated by the Orange County Board of Elections at 12:06 p.m. Wednesday, June 25. It remains unclear whether full vote counts will be finalized before the Independence Day weekend.

This year’s legislative races follow the county’s redistricting process, with new and returning candidates competing for remapped seats.

In the Democratic primary for Orange County Legislature District 6, incumbent Kevindaryán Luján was challenged by Gabrielle Hill. According to the county’s unofficial results, Hill led with 411 votes, while Luján received 230. One write-in vote was recorded.

In Newburgh’s Ward 1 Democratic primary, incumbent Councilwoman Giselle Martinez, who is seeking a second term, defeated challenger Sonya D. Grant, a first-time candidate. Martinez earned 217 votes to Grant’s 112. No write-ins were reported.

In Ward 2, Councilwoman Ramona Monteverde is running for re-election against newcomer Mónica Luján, mother of Legislator Luján. Monteverde led with 129 votes, while Luján garnered 51. One write-in was recorded.

The Ward 3 race featured two new candidates, Ann Marie Hines and Tamika Stewart, vying to replace Councilman Bob Sklarz, who is stepping down at the end of his term. Hines received 131 votes, while Stewart earned 122. No write-ins were reported.
As of June 25, the Board of Elections reported that all Election Day and early voting ballots had been fully counted. Absentee and early mail ballots were partially reported, while affidavit ballots had not yet been reported. All election districts have reported results.
