Geraci resigns as NECSD Director of Safety and Security

Anthony Geraci has resigned as the Newburgh Enlarged City School District’s director of safety and security, with his resignation taking effect March 1.

Geraci’s departure was listed as an agenda item during the Newburgh Board of Education’s meeting on Feb. 25.

Geraci was appointed to the position in April 2024 during a special board meeting, replacing former director Matthew Tindall. His appointment, approved by a 6-3 vote, came with an annual salary of $175,000. He joined the district under Superintendent Dr. Jackielyn Manning Campbell, who has since been suspended. Dr. Lisa Buon is now serving as acting superintendent.

During the Feb. 25 meeting, parent Ronaldo Santiago addressed the resignation, expressing surprise.

“Imagine my shock and my chagrin when I noticed in the agenda that he has tendered his resignation,” Santiago said. “Now I’m not going to sit here and speculate as to the circumstances. I’m hoping that an exit interview will be conducted and that will be enlightening. What I do ask of this body is that when you evaluate your next candidates for this role, you impress upon them that this is a very visible role.”

Santiago also emphasized the need for strong security measures throughout the district, referencing a recent shooting along South Street in front of Newburgh Free Academy’s Main Campus. No injuries were reported, but a former Newburgh student was arrested.

Before joining the district, Geraci served as chief of police for the City of Newburgh. He arrived in 2021 as part of a new leadership team alongside former City Police Commissioner José A. Gomérez. Geraci resigned after three years, with Gomérez stepping down weeks later. The department is now led by Chief Brandon Rola.

Geraci has a 23-year law enforcement background, beginning his career with the New York City Police Department in 1998. He previously served in the 113th Precinct, Transit District 1, Midtown North Precinct, Anti-Crime Unit, and the Police Academy before moving on to law enforcement roles in Albany and Watervliet.

As of Monday, Geraci was still listed on the district’s website as director of safety and security. It remains unclear who will fill the role or whether the district has begun searching for a replacement. The district typically does not comment on personnel matters.

Geraci could not be reached for comment.
