Dragons stay perfect at 15-0

Junior pitcher Charles Rourke dominated from the first pitch, and the Cornwall Dragons rolled to a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over the Washingtonville Wizards in five innings Thursday, keeping their undefeated record intact at 15-0.

Rourke struck out two batters in the opening inning, generating enough velocity that Washingtonville hitters couldn’t catch up to his pitches. He mixed in his changeup and curveball effectively throughout the afternoon, holding the Wizards (6-8) largely without a threat.

“He controlled the game,” Cornwall coach Thomas Fanning said. “He threw his change-up and curveball well. He was in control during the whole game. And the play he made at the end of the game was fantastic.”

That play came in the fifth inning, when Rourke reacted quickly to a ground ball hit left of the mound, scooped it up and fired to first base for the game’s final out.

Rourke credited team chemistry for Cornwall’s sustained success.

“I think everyone is working together and holding each other accountable, which helps us perform in a game,” he said.

The Dragons did their damage early. Senior Aaden Hershberger led off the first inning with a walk and promptly stole second and third base. Colin Steiner followed with a triple that scored Hershberger, and Steiner later scored on an errant pitch that sailed past the Wizards’ catcher.

After three consecutive Cornwall batters drew walks to load the bases, sophomore Sage Caesar stepped up with his teammates rallying behind him from the dugout. He responded with a two-run double that nearly cleared the outfield fence.

Senior Hunter Salisbury then delivered a ground ball that eluded the third baseman and plated two more runs. Steiner capped the first inning with a two-run double, giving Cornwall an 8-0 lead before Washingtonville ever had a chance to settle in.

“It felt great,” said Salisbury, who had been slumping at the plate. “I’ve been pretty slow at the plate recently, so to be able to come up big in that situation felt very good for me. I’m hearing my name from the dugout, so their support helps me do what I can.”

Cornwall pushed its lead to 9-0 in the second inning. Danny Twomey ended the game in the fifth with a two-run double that triggered the mercy rule.

Hershberger, who has been a cornerstone of the Dragons’ lineup since his freshman year, continued to be a catalyst on the basepaths and at the plate.

“We always have belief in each other and everyone’s rolling,” Hershberger said.

Fanning singled out Hershberger as one of the team’s most complete players.

“He just understands the game,” Fanning said. “He sees things before others do and really is a big-time player. He understands the strike zone, knows how to get on base and the importance of a walk.”

Frank Schiraldi and Angel Raposo contributed a double and triple, respectively, for Washingtonville, but the Wizards could not recover from their chaotic first inning, which was plagued by outfield errors and inconsistent pitching from starter Justin Smith.
