The records keep coming for Cornwall lacrosse. Fresh off the demonstrative 14-11 over Warwick that captured its section title, Cornwall’s journey continues. Section 9 champions for the first time in 10 years, the Dragons have scattered program, school, and section records across their program-best 15-win season.
Cornwall kicked off a full day’s slate at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, taking on the Wildcats on a nippy May Saturday. Seven different goal scorers got on Cornwall’s board, with Jaydan Saraceno leading by impressive example. Saraceno had a seven-point morning, tallying 4 goals and 3 assists. Danny Sullivan added 3 goals and 3 assists. Brock Suby netted a pair, including one second-half goal to keep the lunging Wildcats out of reach. Matt Argenio scored one, as did Gabe Colsant and Kyler Furst.
Few squads could do what Cornwall has – because none have Eli Barry at the X. Barry set an all-time Section 9 record with his 758th faceoff win, as he prevailed in 20 of 29 battles against Warwick. And many more can the Dragons expect, as Cornwall is slated to take on the Section 1 winner in the NYSPHSAA Class C regionals.
Strong in goal, Slav Mishkovski made 15 saves, while Cornwall’s many-traveled crowds showered their players in cheers the whole way through. The contest opened a full day of play in Hyde Park, as section finalists feuded over the title rights. The Dragons tightened up the defense as Henry Knox started a scoring gust for Warwick.
The Wildcats clawed close, but Cornwall’s timely scoring kept them ahead the rest of the way, through a late two-man Wildcat advantage, then storming the field to celebrate the hardware that’s eluded their program for seasons.
Cornwall has more to prove yet, as they take to Middletown High School at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 6.
