Eleven people were injured Tuesday morning when a coach bus crashed on the southbound New York State Thruway between the New Paltz and Newburgh exits, according to Ulster County officials.

The crash occurred at about 9:20 a.m. near mile marker 69. New York State Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Officials said there were 22 people aboard the bus. No fatalities were reported.

Eleven passengers were transported to area hospitals, including six with moderate injuries and five with minor injuries. The remaining 11 passengers were taken to SUNY New Paltz, where they met with members of the Ulster County Disaster Mental Health Team and other mental health professionals while awaiting reunification with family members.

Ulster County Area Transit buses transported the uninjured passengers to the SUNY New Paltz reunification site.

The New York State Thruway remained open following the crash, although motorists experienced delays in both directions near the scene. The roadway was briefly closed for about 10 minutes to allow a tow truck access to the crash site.

Officials said the bus appeared to be a transportation service that carries passengers from New York's Capital Region to appointments in New York City.

Multiple fire, EMS, law enforcement and state agencies responded to the scene, including the Plattekill, Cronomer Valley, Modena and New Paltz fire departments, New Paltz Rescue, Wallkill Ambulance, New York State Police, the New York State Thruway Authority and the Ulster County Department of Emergency Services. SUNY New Paltz provided facilities and emergency management support for passenger reunification and care.
