Take a walk down memory lane

The Sit & Chat local history group will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 134 Old State Rd. in Highland Falls. This is the last session of the year, with spring sessions resuming on April 7. Free and open to the public.

“Our previous session was led by Richie Sullivan, an excellent presenter, local history buff and experienced Hudson River canoeist and hiker,” Pastor Agnes Saffoury, who moderates the session, said. “For a change in pace, the topic for November is more relaxed - a stroll down Main Street in the mid-20th century.”

Saffoury, along with Highland Falls’ Susan Schwartz, will lead the interactive discussion about landmarks and milestones. There will be storytelling, reminiscing and anecdotes as the leisurely walk evolves and cornerstones and pillars of the community are identified.

“You will be surprised at the diversity of ‘players’ and their origins, as well as their contributions to the richness of our cultural heritage,” Saffoury said. “Hopefully we will learn more from each other about our community’s appearance and composition before they become so modernized that much of the old familiar will be only vague memories at best.”
