The New Windsor Coach Diner, long owned and operated by the Mylonas family, will soon be changing hands. The family announced the planned transition in December 2025, though legal and licensing hurdles have delayed the transfer of ownership.
Siblings Keatsa, Nicholas and Chris Mylonas opened the diner in 1983. The siblings began their careers in the restaurant industry running a diner in Elmsford, N.Y., before striking out on their own.
“We had a partnership, and then we got out of the partnership and decided to go on our own,” Keatsa Mylonas said.
Keatsa said the main reason the siblings are selling is simply age. “When we started we were like 18 years old, my brother was like 20, and now we’re both in our sixties, so it’s time to retire,” she said. “Plus my parents have gotten older and they need more help.”
None of the siblings’ children wanted to take over the diner. Keatsa’s daughter owns a hair salon, her son went into cybersecurity, and Chris’ son is a pilot for UPS. The diner is being purchased by a pair of business partners who already operate a diner in Connecticut.
Over its 43 years of operation, both the diner and the surrounding town have undergone significant changes. The building has been renovated twice since the Mylonas family took ownership, with new sections and rooms added each time. The clientele has shifted as well, driven by changes to nearby businesses and the broader community.
Chris recalled that in the 1980s, when the diner first opened, “there were a lot of bars, a lot of nightclubs … we did more business at night than during the day.” Today, the diner is frequented mainly by families from the New Windsor area and older residents.
Keatsa said she will miss the diner deeply. “This is your first home, because we’re here day and night … working over 12 to 16 hours every day, we only go home to really sleep,” she said. She added that she will miss the regulars, though she expects to stay in touch with most of them through Facebook.
Chris said the Town of New Windsor had treated the family well, but added, “It’s time for us to start our next adventure.”
