Ebony Clark, an assistant principal at Newburgh Free Academy West has been awarded the National School Leader of the Year distinction by Big Picture Learning. She was one of three awardees recognized by the organization in early 2026 at the organization’s Leadership Summit in New York City.
Clark has worked at NFA West for ten years. She is the daughter of Ernest McDonald, a teacher and Dean at Newburgh Free Academy who worked in the district for 38 years. He inspired her to pursue education, although she originally planned to go into law.
Big Picture Learning is an international educational organization and system of schools focused on developing and promoting personalized and student centered learning techniques.
The Board of Education recognized Clark’s achievement at the board meeting on Tuesday, June 9th. Clark was presented with flowers by the district, and staff members from NFA West lined the room to support her.
Board member Philip Howard praised Clark’s work at NFA, saying “I think that is a super, super achievement, and it goes to the work that is being done at West, it goes to the work that is being done in the district. But bigger than that it goes to Ms. Clark’s love for the job, love for the children….and it shows every day.” Superintendent Jackielyn Manning Campbell commented on the presence of NFA West staff, saying “It speaks volumes that your staff is here with you. They have followed you because you are a great leader.”
Ebony thanked the board, saying “You have supported me, and you have supported this gang of people back here every step of the way.”
