The Eagle Scout Award is the highest award available to youth members of the Boy Scouts of America. On January 5, at New Windsor Community Center, Troop 28 held a Court of Honor Ceremony for Alder Bera. Bera’s Eagle Project was Hospice of Orange/Sullivan Counties, where he provided health care items, day to day necessities which are not covered by Medicare or other insurance benefits, and Bera also collected over $2000 in donations.

Attending the ceremony were New Windsor Town Board Members who presented a Certificate of Achievement; Captain Alfred Worden, New York State Police, who presented a Certificate from Major Michael Sumnick, Troop F Major; Assemblyman Christopher Eachus, and Senator James Skoufis, Representative gave Certificates from State Assembly/State Senate on Alder’s achievement.

Alder pinned the Eagle Scout pin on his mother and also on his dad.  Alder’s brother, Glen Jr, was Master of Ceremonies he received his Eagle Scout last year. After Troop 28 retired the colors, there was food and refreshments. The Bera Family thanked everyone that was present for sharing this proud and happy occasion.  Thank you to Robert McCormick for this information and photo.

Flags were flown at half-staff as Americans bid farewell to our 39th president, James Earl Carter, affectionately known as Jimmy Carter.  He was blessed with a long, faith-filled life, and despite a variety of political challenges during his presidency, he will always by remembered for his tenacity, humility, and dedication to service.

Carter is the only American president to live 100 years.  His funeral brought together current and former presidents, and differences were set aside so that respects could by paid to a man whose humble beginnings started in the small town of Plains, Georgia, and undoubtedly, the young Carter learned the values of hard work and perseverance while working in his father’s peanut plantation during the South’s hot, humid summers.  Known for his ability to embrace optimism despite myriad setbacks, are the qualities the youth of today can emulate, if they put their minds to the task.  May our Lord smile down upon him in His warm embrace.

May you always have an angel at your side.
