Wallkill’s J.J. Wagner advanced to the semifinals of the Mid Hudson Athletic League boys’ tennis championships, but had a difficult day Wednesday, losing both of his matches at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park.

He opened the day losing a semifinal match to eventual champion Romain Benhamou of Rhinebeck, 6-4, 6-3. He then went on to the consolation match, where he was beaten by Spackenkill’s Christian Balbo.

Wagner reached the semifinals with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win over Ellenville’s Alen Ibric.

Despite finishing outside the top three, Wagner will compete at this week’s Section 9 championships at Match Point Tennis Center in Goshen.

He opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win over his Wallkill teammate Ryan Greene, who advanced to the second round with a 10-2 win over Pine Plains’ Logan Garvey.

Wallkill’s doubles team of Matt Swider and Trevor Strano were stopped short of the quarterfinals when they were eliminated by Rhinebeck’s Malcolm Stewart and Noah Roger, 6-3, 7-5. They opened the tournament with a win over Marlboro’s Deni Menendez and Joe Crane.
