Wallkill provides update on summer projects

The Wallkill Central School District continues to move forward with their Capital Project improvements heading into the new school year with updates to their district buildings and school sites.

Wallkill schools will be open once again on Wednesday, September 6.

At the Wallkill Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, August 16, Wallkill Superintendent Kevin Castle provided an update on the capital project work at Wallkill Senior High School that the final blacktop covering for the faculty parking was set to be completed by the end of the week. The school bus turnaround and additional staff lots have also been completed.
Paving for the student parking was set to begin on August 28, according to Castle, though it may be completed sooner if the contractor is able to get to it. Brian Devincenzi, Wallkill Assistant Superintendent for Support Services, announced that work on all the elementary school building roofs have been completed. Final touches would be completed before the start of the school year.

Ceiling tile removal, according to Devincenzi, has been completed in classrooms and other main hallways at Ostrander Elementary, the building with the largest tile removal work, as well as at Wallkill Senior High School as of the Wednesday night meeting.

Leptondale Elementary has also completed ceiling tile work in the classrooms and would be doing additional painting and sheet rocking in their kitchen area with tile work and Plattekill needed tile work, completed in the main lobby. Most of the tile work at the elementary schools would be completed either by the end of that week or by the end of next week (August 21-25) at the latest.

With larger areas of use and building classrooms, Devincenzi shared that locks and other safety devices have been installed. Security vestibules for the buildings will be completed next summer, 2024, as the district ran into supply chain issues with the doors for the vestibules. Greeting stations in all the district buildings are also being worked on currently and would be operational for the upcoming school year.

Other announcements included the middle school auditorium flooring and lighting have been delivered, and chairs in the auditorium are awaiting arrival; but once the chairs are installed, lights and carpet top would soon be installed. “Custodians have done a great job with the buildings,” said Devincenzi. “I want to thank them publicly as well.”
