Walden welcomes Brazilian-Polish fusion café

Posted

A new café/restaurant called PBF Café has opened at 42A Orchard St. in Walden serving a perfect blend of Brazilian and Polish foods. Also called Polish Brazilian Fusion Café, the cafe’s soft opening took place on April 29 and they have already had a jump-start at gaining some regular customers, some even three times a day says Anna Pupo, co-owner.

PBF Café is a family-owned business with co-owners and operators Leo and Anna Pupo cooking homemade recipes in the kitchen and their daughter serving customers behind the counter.

The café at the Village Municipal Square pays homage to their home cities of Belo Horizonte, the capital city of Minas Gerais, Brazil and Krakow, Poland. The mural painted on the left wall of their café is a blend of the Polish flag and the Brazilian flag with the bottom half being the Brazilian flag, representative of Leo’s home country.

“At the top is the Krakow flag, where my wife is from,” Leo said, “and then the Polish flag.”
For Leo Pupo, it came naturally to him to open a business not too far from his home in Montgomery, where the Pupo’s operated a catering business, which provides services throughout the Tri-state area.

“The catering business was always a hobby” Leo said, “with the success of the catering business. I decided to make my hobby my full-time job.”

Currently, PBF Café offers takeout only, but up to 25 people can be seated in the 1,500-square-foot café. Polish specialties like Pierogis and potato pancakes, Brazilian specialties like coxinha and croquette, açai berry and detox smoothies, and freshly squeezed juice are served. European and South American homemade comfort foods, as well as soups, salads, sweets, and even breakfast meals are available. Leo plans on expanding his menu in the future saying “I don’t want to add so much to the menu now because I do not want to lose our identity.” For now, Leo and Anna Pupo are focused on the success of their business and raising their two children.

Their original Kielbasa Mac and Cheese was recently the third-place winner at the 2022 Hudson Valley Mac and Cheese festival. Anna and Leo Pupo said that they opened the Polish and Brazilian Café to allow people to ‘feel the taste of home,’ as their company slogan states.

PBF Café is supported by the local Walden police, emergency services, and Walden Village Manager, John Revella. The Josephine-Louise Public Library across the street has been one of the biggest supporters of the new business.
