Valley Central board hears department overviews

The Valley Central School District presented a series of department overviews at its February 12 school board meeting.

Richard Steger II, Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, gave an extensive overview of his department. The NYS Pubic High School Association has named Valley Central as a High School of Excellence with at least 75% of its athletic teams maintaining GPAs of 90 percent or better. Steger said that 125 students have earned the distinction of scholar athlete by maintaining GPAs of 90% or better.

“Everyone shares in this success,” Steger said.

Steger said his department aims to build a sense of community and gave several examples. Last autumn the boys and girls soccer teams were involved in playoff games. The coaches of other athletic teams curtailed practices and had their teams attend the soccer games.

Steger said he encourages students to improve on their previous fitness tests to become healthier and stronger. His department strives to create a sense of belonging by involving students in Heritage Month celebrations. He said that such activities teach similarities and differences among people. The department promotes success in all parts of life - academics, athletics and personal.

Steger’s teachers talk about the healthy use of technology and social media. They discuss strategies for dealing with challenging and stressful situations.

He thanked the board and the community for its support.

The board also heard presentations on technology, special education, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The Health & Safety Committee reported that the district has completed color coding and mapping of the schools that will help first responders. Threat training has been completed and active shooter training has been scheduled.

The board also heard preliminary ideas on the 2024-25 budget from Superintendent Evette Avila and School Business Official Brad Conklin.

The next board meeting is March 4.
