TOM Supervisor term to remain at two years

Posted

With little to no public support for the plan, the Town of Montgomery has apparently abandoned a plan to increase the length of the town supervisor’s term of office from two years to four.

A public hearing last month on the plan drew questions and comments in opposition to extending the supervisor’s term.

“I was not at the meeting,” said Supervisor Ron Feller. “I did look at the verbiage and I talked to both the council people and I got some emails, and the public hearing was very much against a four-year term. It was my idea, after being in office for about eight months, I thought would be good for the supervisor’s term to be increased to four years.”

Had the town opted to pursue a four-year term, a resolution would have been on the November ballot to increase the term from two to four years. Had it passed, the change would have gone into effect following the November 2025 election for town supervisor.

“Obviously, that’s not the sentiment of the town,” Feller said.”So we will close the public hearing without action on that particular subject.”

Feller, who was appointed in January to fill the unexpired term of now-Assemblyman Brian Maher, is not a candidate for a full two-year term that will be decided in November.

The Republican candidate for town supervisor is Steve Brescia, current Orange County Legislator and Village of Montgomery Mayor. During his tenure as mayor, the term of office was increased from two to four years.

Brescia is being opposed by former Suervisor Susan Cockburn, who is running on an independent line after her petition to appear on the Democratic line had been invalidated after a challenge lodged on behalf of Town of Montgomery Republicans.
