Middies spoil senior night at Pine Bush

It started off as a night of celebration as the Pine Bush wrestling team sent off its five seniors and ended quickly with a 57-9 loss to the Middletown Middies on Thursday night at Pine Bush High School.

The day after they beat the Kingston Tigers, 44-24, on the road, the Bushmen gave up eight bouts, leading to 48 Middletown points. They didn’t field wrestlers in three weight classes against the Tigers.

Before taking the mat against Middletown, the Bushmen recognized their five seniors. Brooke Tarshis and Richard Urena were both in their fifth seasons.

Tarshis recently finished third in the state at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls’ invitational and plans to wrestle Friday and Saturday in the boys’ Section 9 Division I tournament at Monroe-Woodbury High School.

Ethan Conrow and Edward Morley were both in their third seasons on the team and Isaac Gould was in his first season on the team.

Conrow picked up the only win on the mat for the Bushmen.

After the Middies opened the meet by accepting a forfeit at 160 pounds, Conrow pulled out an 11-6 victory over Middletown’s Jacob Estevez.

Conrow got the first takedown in the match but found himself trailing 5-4 late in the second period. However, he scored a takedown with 2 seconds left in the second period to take a 6-5 lead.

Conrow was awarded a point in the first minute of the third period on a clasping penalty against Estevez. He added two more points on a reversal to take control of the match.

The Bushmen trailed the meet by three points, but then gave up three straight forfeits, giving Middletown a 24-3 lead.

When the weight classes turnover over to the lightweights, eighth-grader Griffyn Alfalla suffered an 8-1 loss to Anthony Noboa at 101 pounds.

After two more forfeits, Tarshis lost, 8-4, to Anthony Noboa at 124 pounds. Urena struggled in a 3-1 loss to Jacob Roger at 138 pounds.

The Bushmen’s returning state qualifier Logan Pennell expected to have a match at 152 pounds but accepted a forfeit to end the night.
