Lack of term limits for elected officials

I am writing to express my concerns about the lack of term limits for many elected officials in New York State and Orange Countygovernment.

A few years ago, Assemblymember Brian Maher of the 101st Assembly District introduced legislation addressing term limits for the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. Unfortunately, the issue never seemed to move forward, and today there is very little discussion in Albany about establishing term limits.
I believe it is time to bring that conversation back.

The Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and State Comptroller should be limited to two four year terms. This would be similar to the two term limit placed on the President of the United States. Members of the New York State Assembly and Senate should also have term limits, with a maximum of three terms.

Term limits would give more New Yorkers the opportunity to serve their communities and our state. New people can bring different experiences, fresh ideas, and new leadership to government.

I also believe Orange County should establish term limits for the County Executive, District Attorney, and Sheriff, with a maximum of three terms. Local government should also provide opportunities for new people to step forward and serve.

This should not be a Democratic or Republican issue. It is about good government and making sure elected positions do not become lifetime careers. Public office belongs to the people, and more people should have the opportunity to serve.

It is time for our state and local leaders to have a serious conversation about term limits and take action.
