Understanding the latest mask mandate

Posted

Many New York State residents and, in particular, business owners are rightfully concerned about the latest COVID-related mandate announced last week by Governor Kathy Hochul.

The governor announced Friday that masks will be required to be worn in all indoor public places in New York State unless businesses or venues implement a vaccine requirement. In other words, show up at an indoor public place or any place of business - office, church, restaurant or the dollar store to pick up some Christmas cards or wrapping paper, and be prepared to either show proof of vaccination or put on the mask.

It puts many small businesses in a bind. Many don’t have the time or the resources (or the inclination) to check for vaccination cards of everyone coming through the door. Some may fear a pushback from customers who would believe non-compliance is a better solution. Some fear losing customers who have been slow to return since the start of the pandemic.

In addition, a number of counties in New York State oppose the new mandate and have declared their intention not to enforce it. Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus may have summed it up best in his daily COVID brief on Monday. Neuhaus said Orange County lacks the resources to enforce it. It is simply not practical to send sheriff’s deputies into every Orange County business to make sure there is compliance. He did urge voluntary compliance. Residents should use the proper caution when attending holiday parties and events and should be respectful of those who are wearing masks and social distancing. And we should be respectful when the sign on the front door asks all patrons to wear a mask upon entering.

The best we can ask of anyone is to take a common sense approach. The holiday season is here, and we should celebrate the season and enjoy the company of family and friends. But we can do it without putting each other in harm’s way.

Have a safe and healthy holiday season.
