Ulster County Clerk Nina Postupack is pleased to announce the Matthewis Persen House Museum’s participation in the 2021 New York State Path Through History Weekend on Saturday, October 9 with a special event recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day. The Persen House is located at 74 John Street in uptown Kingston, at the corner of John and Crown Streets. Admission is free and all are welcome.

On Saturday, October 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Save Native Sites presents a NYS Path Through History Weekend event, “A Recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day.” The event will start with drumming from the Cloud Breaker’s Society at 11am, weather permitting, and at 12pm a video presentation by Mark Peters, Chief of the Munsee-Delaware Nation in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. The presentation will cover the history of the Munsee people, where they lived and where they are now.

Chief Mark Peters has been the historian for the Munsee-Delaware Nation for over 30 years. He has also worked in the Logging Industry in the Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii, on an Oil/Natural Gas Rig in Northern Alberta, as a Social Worker, and in Criminal and Family Law as a Member of the Law Society of Ontario. In addition to history, his present focus is on determining and finding ways to exercise Inherent Indigenous Rights which have been severely limited by Canadian Law over the past 150 years.

Path Through History Weekends are a showcase of New York State’s rich and fascinating history and will feature hundreds of events happening at historic and cultural destinations throughout the state. Stickers will be distributed at all participating sites throughout the weekend and participants are urged to post pictures wearing their stickers to social media with the hashtag #PTHWeekend and the event location.

It is our privilege to, once again, host one of her programs at the Persen House.”
