The U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Train makes its annual visit to Montgomery

Nothing quite sends a Christmas message like the site of an antique train pulling into Montgomery crossing on a snowy Sunday afternoon.

This year marked the 10th annual visit of the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Train to Montgomery, collecting toys, bringing Santa and spreading good cheer. This year’s attraction included vintage railroad cars once used by the fabled Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus.

The Montgomery stop brought out some 400 residents and netted 1640 toys, according to Village Trustee Mike Hembury who accompanied the train the entire way to Port Jervis, along with his wife Sue who sported her elf costume for the occasion. There was also holiday music, hot chocolate, wagon rides and holiday treats.

“It’s a friendly competition amongst the municipalities to see who can get the most toys, and we won this year,” Hembury said. “In the end, we all win.”

The total amount of toys collected for the whole day was 4,248.
