Tax Exemption weighed for Town Volunteers

The Newburgh Town Board approved to schedule a public hearing on Tuesday, February 14, for a tax exemption for volunteer fire companies and volunteer ambulance services. The exemption will be available for volunteer fire companies and volunteer ambulance services members, surviving spouses of those members who received a lifetime exemption and surviving spouses of those members killed in the line of duty.

According to town documents, in order for the new exemption to take effect, the exemption must be adopted and active before March 1, 2023. The new exemption allows up to 10 percent of the assessed value of the current and primary residence. A $3,000 market value cap will be removed with the new exemption once in effect. Additional breakdowns of the local law are available on the town website for further information and public review.
