New business Sub Rosa, owned by Allison Cannarsa-Barr, was welcomed to the City of Newburgh with a celebratory ribbon cutting on Thursday, April 25. Family, friends and city council members joined in the celebration of the local storefront.
The new business is at 89 Liberty Street. Inside the shop are a variety of handmade, local goods for customers to browse or purchase, including candles, pottery, art pieces and other handmade items.
“I would sum it up as a store where you can find art gifts and unique items for the home. Things you wouldn’t find necessarily somewhere else, which is important to me. A lot of vintage and antique mixed in with new and handmade and local items,” said Cannarsa-Barr.
Sub Rosa is a Latin term translated to “under the rose” and is associated with secrecy and privacy. The term also shares a special meaning within Cannarsa-Barr’s family. “I have a lot of Roses in my family. I’ve descended from a line of female relatives named Rose, so I’m kind of under the rose,” she said.
Mayor Torrance Harvey welcomed Cannarsa-Barr and joined her alongside At-Large Councilman Omari Shakur and Ward 2 Councilwoman Ramona Monteverde for the ribbon cutting. Applause and cheers were shared as the ribbon was cut.
“It’s very satisfying to see her finally realize this dream that she’s had because something like this doesn’t happen overnight,” said Tim Barr, Allison’s husband. “She’s really put her heart and soul into this, so I’m very excited for her.”
Other family, friends and city residents browsed the shelves and made several purchases. The store hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. To learn more about the store and browse online, visit www.shopsubrosa.com.
“We’ve had the pleasure of knowing Allison and Tim for the past couple of years. Having her here in the City of Newburgh and on Liberty Street and seeing one of her dreams become a reality is just fantastic,” said friend Jason Bose.
“I just have to say she has the best taste, the absolute best taste and I’m so excited that she has a storefront and she’s able to share that eye and the unique finds with everyone, not just in Newburgh, but hopefully in the Hudson Valley,” said friend Caitlan Bose.
Sub Rosa recently participated in the Spring Into Downtown Newburgh event on May 11.
“I’m super excited to be here and to be a part of the community. I love the location. I feel so lucky to be here and I definitely want to be here for a while,” said Cannarsa-Barr.
