Seven individuals and one relay team to represent area at state meet

There was almost no reason for many of Pine Bush’s senior athletes to compete at last week’s New York State track and field qualifiers, as both Madison Williams and Ella Galloway were already qualified in two events, each having previously met the state super standards.

The New York State Federation meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School in Syracuse.

Galloway was a state outdoor pole vault championship last year and she has an opportunity to make history repeat itself.

She’s already jumping better than she did last year, as she cleared 13-3, nearly two feet better than the state super-standard. She was already in before winning Thursday’s State track and field qualifier at New Paltz High School.

That didn’t stop the friendly competition she has shared for the last several years with Warwick’s Lily Beattie, who finished second.

“It’s just been back and forth,” Galloway said. “It’s always Lily makes a (personal record) and then I try to chase her and make it after her. But we’re good friends. It’s just friendly competition and I like having someone that pushes me to be better.”

Galloway also was prequalified for the state meet in the high jump when she entered the qualifying meet having already met the state super standard of 5-4.

Williams entered the meet already qualified for the state championships having met the super standard in the long jump and triple jump. She won the long jump but fouled out of the triple.

Teammate Mya Riquelme, also a senior, qualified for the state meet, winning the triple jump with a jump of 36-7.5.

The boys’ 400-meter relay team of Andres Martinez, Shawn Riquelme, Russo and Nicholas Burgess clinched a berth at the state meet when they won the race in a time of 43.01 seconds.

Shaylen Goslar, who wasn’t prequalified qualified for the state meet on Friday at New Paltz High School when she won the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:11.54. She also qualified for the state meet with a winning time of 2:11.54 in the girls’ 1,500-meter run.

Pine Bush’s Nicholas Burgess entered the meet qualified for the boys’ 400-meter dash having previously met the state super standard with a 48.68.

Junior Plexico Brooks had pre-qualified for states when he met the super standard in the high jump by reaching 6-5. Russo, a sophomore, finished second in the high jump, reaching a height of 6-4. Brooks chose not to jump after clearing 6-2 at the risk of eliminating Russo or Middletown’s Jean Franco Del Valle, both of which cleared 6-4, meeting the at-large standard.

Valley Central senior Catherine Primavera qualified for states when she finished second in the girls’ 200-meter dash with a time of 25.65 seconds. She will be the only Valley Central athlete attending the meet.

Wallkill sophomore Caitlyn Murphy qualified for the state meet when she finished second in the 1,500-meter run, with a time of 4:37.19. Like Primavera, she is the only athlete from her school to go to states.

For area seniors, it will be their last trip to states.

“It’s bittersweet because I’m extremely excited for the next chapter, jumping at the University of South Florida, but I know all the girls here,” Galloway said. “It’s a really good environment with all the girls. We’re all friends and root for each other, so it’s definitely bittersweet.”
