Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus announced on Wednesday that Dr. Irina Gelman has been named the Commissioner of Health for Nassau County on Long Island.

“I want to congratulate Dr. Gelman on her new position and wish her the best,” Neuhaus said. “I commend Dr. Gelman for her tireless work for Orange County, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as she played an integral role in the response to the unprecedented public health emergency. I know Dr. Gelman will be an asset to the residents of Nassau County.”

Dr. Gelman was hired as the Commissioner of Health by Orange County in July of 2018. She previously served as Fulton County’s Director of Public Health. Dr. Gelman was the recipient of the 2018 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction Award. She continues to serve as the Vice President of the New York State Association of County Health Officials (NYSACHO) Board of Directors and remains an active fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine.

Neuhaus said that a search for  Gelman’s replacement will begin immediately.
