Maybrook has yet to replace Amthor as police chief

Posted

The Village of Maybrook is currently without a chief of police, as Arnold “Butch” Amthor retired from the position to focus on his role as the chief of the City of Newburgh Police Department.

Mayor Dennis Leahy has taken over as the agency’s chief executive officer. The day-to-day operations are currently being run by sergeants Michael Maresca and Dennis Barnett, who report to Leahy. Both sergeants give Leahy daily updates and talk to him as needed.

Both Maresca and Barnett are veteran officers. Maresca began his career as a police officer in 2008, serving with the Village of Maybrook. It took him just three and a half years to rise to the rank of sergeant where he became the first ever Civil Service Sergeant in the history of the Village of Maybrook’s Police Department. On July 2, 2018, he was appointed deputy chief of the Town of Mount Hope Police Department.

Barnett, a part-time police sergeant in the Village of Maybrook, served as an officer with the Town of Montgomery Police Department for 19 ½ years. The department held a ceremony for him on his last day in 2018.

In the spring Leahy plans to hire another full-time officer as well as part-time chief of police.

Amthor tried to keep his position in Maybrook when he was hired as deputy chief in the City of Newburgh. The city council did not allow him to keep the job, as his new position required his undivided attention.
