Marlboro throwers setting records

It’s been a strong summer for the Marlboro Dukes throwers, as a discus record fell for the second time in the past several months and another threw a personal best in the hammer throw.

In early July, Victoria Maher became the second member of the Marlboro girls’ track and field team to set a new school record in the discus throw.

Less than 2 months after her teammate Juliana Juras set a new discus mark of 118-3, breaking a record that stood since 1988, Maher surpassed her during the summer.

Maher threw a nine-foot personal best at a July 10 throwing invitational at 12th Rock Sports in Middletown. Her throw of 126.5 eclipsed Juras’ throw in late May, and the Dukes’ record board changed again.

Maher exploded into state contention late in the season when she threw a 117-6 at the state qualifiers, just a week after throwing in the mid-90s. She didn’t expect to hit this distance for another year.

Then on Aug. 13, Jose Iraola-Ceely set a new personal record in the hammer throw, reaching 153 feet. The August meet also gave him the opportunity to meet Olympians Alex Young and Rudy Winkler, who also competed.
