Liberty Street Bakery moves to Poughkeepsie

Posted

Bread and Batter Bakery, formerly known as Newburgh Flour Shop, served its last customer and closed its doors for the last time at their 109 Liberty Street location on Sunday, April 9. Community members will still be able to taste their delicious treats and delicacies at their new location in The Academy in Poughkeepsie when their new location opens on April 18.

According to Kristina DePalma-Ortiz, Executive Pastry Chef and one of the owners of the shop, Bread and Batter first opened its doors in August of 2018 on Liberty Street. Over the course of the past four and a half years that the business has been open, members of the staff that began with them early on have remained with them and will continue to be a part of the business moving forward at the Academy.

“‘I’m excited for the opportunity to break into Poughkeepsie and their food culture and move into the Academy and what they’ve built over the last year, while still maintaining the presence in the city where we started,” said DePalma-Ortiz. “We’ve been working with them since they opened. So we provide breads, we provide pastries, we provide desserts for the restaurant, currently, so we’ve started along with them.” The Academy, a reported $13 million project, is a mixed-use commercial and entertainment venue that opened in the City of Poughkeepsie that offers both food from various restaurants and businesses. The hope for this project was to help in the potential growth and resurgence of the city.

Even during the pandemic, customers from Newburgh continued to support Bread and Batter however they could. “It was because of these regulars, people who came in every day or every morning, getting a coffee or getting local delivery of things when we were offering local deliveries for us that we very much want to continue and it’s important to continue our relationship with [regulars] and continue relationship with the City of Newburgh,” said DePalma-Ortiz.

While the Liberty Street space may not be open following Easter Sunday, Bread and Batter will still maintain a presence in the City of Newburgh. The former Liberty Street Bistro location would be looking to distribute the shop’s products once it officially opens. The business would look to be open by Mid-May. “What we’re looking to do is just continue to grow. This move is not an end of anything, it’s a continuation,” said DePalma-Ortiz. “This community [Newburgh] has helped us grow to a point that we can grow and expand to a new city. Without them I don’t think we would have built up to where we are.”

No other details have been shared yet on what the former restaurant space’s name would be and what it would be offering. The bistro closed its door in November 2022 after six and a half years in the city.

On behalf of DePalma-Ortiz and her staff, Bread and Batter thanked its customers and the city for their support over the years and look forward to the next step of their journey. “This community supports us, it supports 15 families. So we’re just grateful for the fact that we have so many people who were along this journey with us and cared so much,” said DePalma-Ortiz. “Thank you, really just thank you.”
