Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D-Newburgh) has nominated the Newburgh Free Library for the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. Awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, this prestigious medal is given to institutions that “demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service.”

“Under Executive Director Mary Lou Carolan’s thoughtful and innovative leadership, the Newburgh Free Library has brought the library of the future to our community today, Jacobson said,

“The Newburgh Free Library has gone far beyond its core mission of lending books to providing networking opportunities and dual-language programming, serving as a critical community hub, and offering instruction on everything from Pilates to digital skills to tenants’ rights. Newburgh is fortunate to have this outstanding institution and its incredible staff in the heart of our city. I am proud to nominate the Newburgh Free Library for the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service.”

Other officials and organizations supporting the Library’s nomination include Senator James Skoufis, Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey, Newburgh Urban Farm and Food, Crossroads Chess Community, Open Hub, and Mount Saint Mary’s Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness.

Each year, the Institute of Museum and Library Services selects three libraries and three museums to honor. Finalists will be announced in the spring of 2023.
