The Newburgh City Council unanimously approved on Monday, November 28 the resolution to designate and recognize December 10, 2022 and so forth as Human Rights Day, and December 10 to 17 as Human Rights Week in the City of Newburgh.

The resolution was brought forward by the city’s Human Rights Commission with a majority of council members expressing support for the passage prior to the vote.

Human Rights Day, which has been celebrated annually on December 10, commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. On December 10, 1949, President Harry Truman issued the first presidential proclamation establishing the holiday in the United States. In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed and recognized the first Human Rights Week in the United States.
