City officially opens new outdoor fitness court

City of Newburgh residents can now enjoy and take advantage of a new free outdoor workout fitness court located at Delano-Hitch Park near the basketball courts. The city celebrated the grand opening of the new court with a ceremonial ribbon cutting on Thursday, July 7.

The outdoor fitness court itself, created by The National Fitness Campaign [NFC], is a seven usage workout circuit. Fitness courts are available not only in Newburgh but across the country on college campuses and other city parks and neighborhoods. The court offers workouts that test your core, agility and help you work out other parts of your muscles and body. Equipment for lunges, pull-ups, push-ups, squats and other workouts are available on this court. A Fitness Court App is also available for download so residents and visitors can have access to a free digital workout library.

In October 2021, Senator James Skoufis and Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson had held a joint press conference where they pledged $50,000 each towards the construction of the new fitness court. An additional $30,000 was pledged by the NFC towards the court construction.

Prior to the ribbon cutting, Mayor Torrance Harvey and Jacobson stepped onto the fitness court and inspected and tested out several of the workout equipment.

“I learned about this fitness court idea from the Village of Haverstraw. They were ahead of the curve. They’re one of the first in New York State who brought the national campaign to their village. I thought that this would be a wonderful idea to bring to the City of Newburgh,” Skoufis said. “Glad to be here. This is a wonderful day, another wonderful day in the City of Newburgh. Congratulations to the city.”

“It’s a way that everybody can participate. It’s something that everybody can use,” Jacobson said. “It’s just great that we’re doing this. It’s something permanent.”
