City of Newburgh welcomes the season

The City of Newburgh kicked off the Christmas season with music, floats and candy as the annual city Holiday Parade made its way through the city streets, spreading Christmas cheer.

On the morning of the parade, several members of the Department of Public Works, city council members and other staff gathered at the Department of Public Works headquarters along Pierces Road and prepared their floats and costumes, ready to share the Christmas magic.

Setting off, the parade made its way with the floats and holiday vehicles along the city route guided by police and fire escort. Santa Claus along with Mrs. Claus and Mayor Torrance Harvey rode on one of the fire engines as it made its way through the city. Following behind was Councilman Anthony Grice, Councilwoman Ramona Monteverde, Councilwoman Giselle Martinez and Councilman Bob Sklarz all dressed up with other members of the parade as they tossed out candy for kids and waved to the people passing by. Following behind their float was a giant and goofy reindeer, then a wacky and fun cast of Dr. Seuss characters in Santa’s sleigh, and finally the Grinch, who was nice this year and waved as he went on his way. Members of the police department brought up the rear and played Christmas music over the loudspeakers as they continued on.

The parade ended in the early afternoon and families and residents enjoyed the candy and seeing Santa Claus, and now the city would be ready for the tree lighting that was set to take place on Tuesday, December 13.
