18-wheelers a problem on Walden’s East Avenue

Posted

Walden resident Bill Taylor addressed the village board last week with a complaint of large trucks in his East Avenue neighborhood, including one that passed through recently.

“Within an hour, water started bubbling up. I can only assume the damage was caused by the 18-wheeler,” Taylor said. “My lateral was not affected. My neighbor’s lateral was not affected.”

Taylor said there are weight restrictions posted at the corner of Grant and Elm Street that may deter truckers from entering Route 208 from there.

“However, we don’t have a sign on 208 that says they can’t come down,” Taylor added. “I don’t understand that concept.”

There are also signs posted approximately 75 feet from the entrance to East Avenue. Once a driver sees it, it may be too late to turn around.

Taylor said he has relayed his concerns to the village manager and the village Department of Public Works. He suggested that more signs and more enforcement were needed.

“We all understand it only takes one to bust a lateral,” he said, adding that with so many projects on the table in the town and village, the matter could only get worse.

Village Manager John Revella suggested signs at the entrance to the village posting weight restrictions, a practice employed in Maybrook.
