The Ulster County Legislature Republican Caucus is calling for a comprehensive investigation into reported conditions at the Ulster County morgue following a recent tour by legislators.
Legislators have reported fallen ceiling tiles, blood on the floor, malfunctioning refrigeration equipment and deteriorated equipment at the facility. Health, Human Services and Human Rights Committee Chairman Eric Stewart described the conditions as severe following the tour.
The caucus said Deputy County Executive James Amenta has disputed portions of the reports while acknowledging that a refrigeration unit is not working and that the aging facility needs to be replaced. The Republicans said the differing accounts warrant an investigation to establish the facts.
The caucus is seeking a review of maintenance and inspection records, employee complaints, equipment requests, refrigeration failures and communications involving the county Department of Health, Medical Examiner’s Office, Department of Public Works and County Executive’s Office.
“We need the records, the timeline and the facts — what happened, when it happened and what steps are being taken to correct it,” said Legislator Jason Kovacs.
The caucus also cited concerns about the availability of basic equipment, including a gurney, Stryker bed and a vehicle with a lift for moving human remains.
Deputy Minority Leader Craig Lopez said the county should ensure that employees have a safe workplace and that deceased individuals are treated with dignity. Minority Leader Kevin Roberts called for accountability from the county administration.
The caucus is asking County Executive Jen Metzger and her administration to investigate the reported conditions, address any health, safety or operational deficiencies and provide the Legislature and public with an accounting of what occurred.
The Republican caucus was scheduled to hold a meeting Sept. 15 at the Ulster County Office Building in Kingston.
