The Hudson Valley Renegades were unable to overcome an early deficit Sunday, falling 10-4 to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws in the series finale at Heritage Financial Park.
Jersey Shore seized control early, scoring three runs in the second inning and four more in the third to build a 7-0 lead. The BlueClaws added another run before Hudson Valley got on the board, sending the Renegades into the bottom of the fourth trailing 8-0.
Left-hander Allen Facundo (3-3) endured one of the toughest outings of his season, allowing career highs of eight runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out seven while surrendering a home run. Facundo has now issued four or more walks in four of his last five starts and has not completed five innings since July 2 against Wilmington, although he has recorded at least five strikeouts in nine starts this season.
Hudson Valley’s pitching staff struggled with command throughout the afternoon, issuing seven walks and producing just one perfect inning. Jersey Shore consistently capitalized, recording multiple hits in four different innings.
The Renegades mounted a late response but could not sustain enough offense. Hudson Valley managed only two hits after the fourth inning despite drawing five walks and having two batters hit by pitches over the final five frames, stranding six runners. Eight of the club’s nine starters reached base, though only five collected hits.
Jersey Shore’s pitching staff continued to dominate the Renegades throughout the series, striking out 12 batters Sunday to finish the six-game set with 65 strikeouts.
Roderick Arias continued his torrid stretch at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored and a hit-by-pitch. The infielder doubled in each of the final three games of the series and rebounded from an 0-for-8 start by finishing 7 for 15 (.467) with three doubles and a 1.167 OPS over the final four contests. Arias has now reached base in 42 of his last 46 games and is batting .349 with a 1.031 OPS, 10 home runs and 40 RBIs since June 5.
Robbie Burnett added another productive performance, finishing 2 for 4 with a double while recording his second consecutive multi-hit game. Since the All-Star break, Burnett has emerged as one of Hudson Valley’s hottest hitters, batting .302 with a .956 OPS, three home runs and 13 RBIs since July 19.
Jackson Lovich went 1 for 2 with three walks and a run scored, extending his hitting streak through every game of the week. Since joining High-A Hudson Valley, Lovich is batting .381 with a .458 on-base percentage through his first six games.
Willy Montero doubled and drove in a run for his first High-A extra-base hit, while Enmanuel Tejeda reached base for the sixth straight game in the series.
Reliever Brandon Decker tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out one. He has now held opponents scoreless in four of his last five appearances.
The loss dropped Hudson Valley to 7-11 against Jersey Shore this season, including 5-7 at Heritage Financial Park. The Renegades also fell to 17-19 in the second half after finishing the week 1-5 against the BlueClaws.
Despite the disappointing finish, the series featured several standout individual performances for Hudson Valley. Sean Paul Liñan earned the club’s lone victory Friday by pitching into the eighth inning in a 6-4 win, while Bryce Cunningham tossed the first complete game of his professional career Saturday despite taking a 2-0 loss in the opener of a doubleheader. Cunningham’s effort marked the Renegades’ fourth complete game of the season, the organization’s highest total since 1995.
The BlueClaws won five of the six games in the series, taking advantage of dominant pitching and timely offense to strengthen their season edge over the Renegades.
