Purchase a ‘flag of honor’ to honor our veterans

The American Legion Viebey-Sutton Unit #124 is celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday with its “Flags of Honor” event. In tribute to local veterans, the post has placed 250 American flags on display.

Community members may purchase a flag in honor of a veteran for $20. To participate, contact Ed Timberberger at 845-805-9358 and, when leaving a message, include the veteran’s name, branch of service and your phone number. Payments may be dropped off in an envelope in the mailbox outside the hall at 50 Western Ave., Marlboro.

The Marlboro Free Library has several upcoming events for residents to enjoy. The library’s May Book Club meeting will be held Wednesday, May 27, at 7 p.m. Readers will discuss The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. Copies are available at the circulation desk throughout the month. Due to construction, the meeting will be held offsite, with the location to be announced. The library’s Walking Club continues on select Wednesdays — May 20, June 3 and June 17 — from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Meeting locations will be posted to the library’s online calendar one week prior to each walk. Participants are encouraged to RSVP for weather-related updates.
Registration is also open for a Defensive Driving Class sponsored by American Safety Inc., to be held Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marlborough Community Center. The course will be taught by certified instructor Peter Khan. Cost is $40, payable by cash or check the day of the class. Attendees should arrive 15 minutes early and are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch. A refrigerator will be available. Registration is required through marlborolibrary.org.

At Marlboro schools, students were recently recognized during an Exemplary Student Breakfast held May 7. The event honored students who have demonstrated academic achievement, growth, positive contributions and support for their classmates. Each marking period, departments select one exemplary student, recognized alongside the teacher who nominated them. Families joined the celebration, and the district’s Food Services Department provided breakfast.
The Town of Marlborough has announced registration details for the 2026 Summer Day Camp at Cluett Schantz Memorial Park.

Registration was held May 9, with ongoing daily registration beginning May 18 at the Town Supervisor’s Office in Town Hall, 21 Milton Turnpike, Milton. For information, call 845-795-5100 ext. 2. Children ages 5½ through 13 may attend, provided younger children have completed kindergarten before camp begins.

St. Mary’s Church invites families who have requested Mass intentions to participate in the Offertory procession by bringing up the bread and wine during Mass. Families should notify an usher before Mass begins. Mother’s Day envelopes are also available for those wishing to remember mothers, grandmothers, aunts and godmothers in special Masses offered on Mother’s Day.

The Marlboro Seniors Club has issued a correction regarding its Skyline Cruises outing. The trip will take place June 30, not May 12. The four-hour cruise includes lunch aboard and views of landmarks including the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge. The cost is $90, with departure from the Marlboro Community Center at 9 a.m. Non-members will pay an additional $10 for bus transportation. A reminder to residents that the annual statewide residential brush burning ban remains in effect through May 14.

Upcoming events include Senior Fellowship Suppers from 3 to 5 p.m. May 17 and June 14 at Christ Episcopal Church, Route 9W and Old Post Road. Reservations are required by calling 845-236-6000.
The First Presbyterian Church of Marlboro will host a Community Yard Sale on Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 55 Grand St. Vendor spots are available for $20. For information, email event@marlboropresbyterian.org or call Abby at 845-527-2961.

Weekly Recipe
Slow Cooker Beer Braised Pork Chops
INGREDIENTS
4 thick-cut bone-in pork chops (about 2 to 2½ pounds total, at least 1 inch thick)
1 packet (1.5 ounces) dry onion soup mix
1 bottle (12 ounces) brown ale beer
INSTRUCTIONS
Place the pork chops in a single layer in the bottom of a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker. Sprinkle the dry onion soup mix evenly over the pork chops. Pour the brown ale beer over the pork chops and onion soup mix. Do not stir.
Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours, or at HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the pork chops are very tender and reach an internal temperature of 145°F. Enjoy!
