Student Leadership Spotlight

In recognition of National Student Leadership Week, Marlboro High School junior Zachary Dina is being recognized for his impact both on and off the basketball court.

For several months, Zachary has volunteered as a coach for the New Paltz Owlbears, a Unified Basketball team through Special Olympics. Giving up his winter Saturdays, he has worked with athletes from Ulster, Dutchess and Orange counties, helping them build basketball skills, confidence and friendships.

On April 19, Zachary helped lead the team at the Special Olympics tournament at SUNY New Paltz, where the Owlbears earned a second-place finish in Division 1.

Through the Unified program, which brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities, Zachary has demonstrated the true meaning of inclusion, teamwork and leadership.
The community is incredibly proud of his dedication and compassion.

Orecchiette with Italian Sausage and Broccoli Florets – Sue M
1/2 tsp. salt
1 lb. orecchiette
1 lb. broccoli florets
2 Tbsp. salted butter
1 lb. sweet or hot Italian sausage, ground
garlic cloves, finely chopped
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes

1 cup grated parmesan cheese
Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package directions, adding the broccoli for the last 2 minutes. Drain.
Melt butter in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the sausage and cook, breaking it up, until browned, about 5 minutes.
Add the garlic, salt, black pepper and red pepper flakes to the sausage and cook, stirring, about 1 minute.
Add the chicken broth and cook for 1 minute, scraping up the bottom of the pot. Reduce heat to medium-low and stir in the heavy cream. Simmer until thickened, 3 to 4 minutes.
Reduce heat to low and stir in the parmesan. Add the pasta and broccoli to the pot and stir to coat.
Top with additional parmesan.
