Around Town
The Marlboro Milton Seniors Club is collecting school supplies to help local children prepare for the upcoming school year. Donations may be dropped off at the Marlboro Community Center during senior meeting hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays.
Flagpole Contest Winner
Congratulations to Annette Mannese-Ferrari, winner of the community Flagpole Contest. Her guess of 100 feet, 10 inches came closest to the official height of the flagpole, which measured 102 feet, 6⅜ inches from the concrete base to the top of the ball.
Annette will receive $250 in prizes donated by Fermata, Brix, Frank’s Deli, Comparetto Bakery, Men’s Room and Zambito & Son.
Thanks go to Carmen Messina for serving as the official surveyor and to Doc Pascale for organizing the contest and coordinating the prize donations. Organizers also thank everyone who participated.
Marlboro Free Library
Readers of all ages are invited to participate in the library’s Summer Reading Challenge.
Children, tweens and teens can pick up fossil-themed reading logs at the library and return completed logs by Sept. 1 to earn prizes.
Adults can participate in the “Gems of Summer” challenge through Sept. 4. Participants earn prizes for every three hours of reading and may complete multiple logs throughout the summer.
The Marlboro Free Library Walking Club meets from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 12 and Aug. 26. Meeting locations will be posted on the library’s online calendar one week before each walk. Participants are encouraged to RSVP for weather updates.
Sarah Hull Hallock Library
The Book Lovers Club will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, to discuss Louise Penny’s How the Light Gets In. Copies are available at the library. Call 845-795-2200 or email info@miltonlib.org for assistance obtaining materials. Walk-ins are welcome.
The library will also host its Summer’s End Barnyard Friends celebration from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 20. Families can enjoy a petting zoo featuring bunnies, goats and a pony. Summer Reading grand prize winners will be announced at 5 p.m. Registration is encouraged.
Weekly Recipe
Lemon Impossible Pie
INGREDIENTS
2 cups milk, dairy, soy, almond or other milk
4 large eggs
¾ cup granulated sugar
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
2 tsp. grated lemon zest
2 Tbs. fresh lemon juice
½ tsp. lemon paste or regular extract
Confectioner’s sugar, for dusting
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a deep 9-inch pie pan.
Combine all the ingredients, except the confectioners’ sugar, and in a blender and process until blended. Pour into the prepared pie dish. Bake until center is firm and the top is golden brown, for about 1 hour. The center will have a slight wobble to the center, which will set as it cools.
Set the pie on a wire rack and let cool completely. Just before serving, dust it with confectioners’ sugar, cut into wedges and serve.
