Marlboro girls’ soccer kicked off the fall season with a pair of tightly-played scrimmages. With a seconds-left goal by Morgan Hagar, the Dukes salvaged a 2-2 draw against Rhinebeck on September 3.

Ella Schmidt’s corner kick, a short pass, set up Hagar’s equalizer to salvage the draw. Stella Delfini scored the Dukes’ opening goal in the full game effort for Marlboro.

After graduating only two seniors from last year’s squad, Coach Jess Migge’s team includes a healthy mix of returners and first-year players. The role of the upperclassmen, support and setting expectations.

For first-year players, it is the adjustment to new roles, and absorbing what the veterans apply to their training.

A “powerful force”, according to Migge, junior Hagar provides contributions on any corner of the field. Delfini and Olivia Morales handle the mental fortitude, creating opportunities by any means.

Each completed pass and goal are the exhibits of toughness from the senior leaders, and strength is their medium.

Marlboro has more that it can rely on, as well.

“We are not going to rely on just one or two players. It’s going to be a very team-oriented group, and I’m excited to see how everyone continues to develop throughout the season,” said Migge.

The keys to the Dukes’ game include playing for something bigger than the individual player. Consistent attitude, and the common goal of creating chaos for opponents on the field for 80 minutes. Sometimes, more.

“We want to walk off the field after every practice and game knowing we are taking a step in the right direction and doing it as a team,” said Migge.

Marlboro prevailed in a 1-0 decision against Newburgh Free Academy on August 31. Morales had the goal for the Dukes.

“We’re still a work in progress, but I think there is a lot of potential with this group. We’re going to compete every time we step on the field, and I’m really excited to see what we can accomplish together this season,” added Migge.
