Huskies topple Liberty in opener

Posted

Osei Adoma rushed for two touchdowns and returned a punt for a score, leading the Highland football team to a 32-6 road win over Liberty on Saturday.

After falling behind 6-0 in the first quarter, Aden Wiser recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, giving the Huskies a 7-6 lead, they would never relinquish.

Wiser also added a rushing touchdown and Matt Dubois tacked on two extra points. James Gescheidle rushed 14 times for 93 yards.

The Huskies’ defense was led by Dylan Durandis, Keith Bohlinger, and Robbie Hinspeter. Taki Bakatsias had an interception.

The Huskies were a young squad last year, going 0-3, but only graduated three seniors – Jake Duncan, Aidan Madura and Christopher Lee - from a small Fall 2 roster.

But there are several returning players who got plenty of experience due to last year’s small roster.
Osei Adoma returns in the offensive and defensive back field, while Aiden Wiser returns under center. Also back are seniors Ryan Auchmoody (C/LB), Dean Klotz (G/DT) and Frankie Guidi (T/DE), along with juniors Dylan Durandis (SE/LB), Taki Bakatsias (RB/DB), and Robbie Hinspeter (G/LB). Also back is sophomore tackle and defensive end Mark Cozzupoli.

They will mix with two juniors – Keith Bohlinger and Erik Nelson – and three sophomores – Craig Elliot, James Gescheidle and Connor Gemmell.

“Due to our low numbers in the spring, many younger players gained valuable experience,” Coach Tom Schlappich said. “Our goal is to strive to be our best and work hard to improve every day. We want to get to the point where we are playing for the section championship year in and year out.”
